They want to kickstart the esports scene officially as fast as possible. With three slots, it can fast forward the development of China's scene towards them becoming the fourth major region after Americas, EMEA, and Pacific.
With closed beta in full swing and a lot of domestic resources being poured into the launch soon, it's more than obvious. They're not an ass region for now.
Really not Riot's MO; maybe with Game Changers they can be a bit more liberal with their slotting with the East Asian GC (JP, KR, CN) and last year with the East Asian LCQ, but with the current model for the main VCT tournament, it won't work. China is too big of a region both economically and resource-wise to be grouped in the long run with other regions.
Plus, China's regulation is a bit different than the other regions.
they're not gonna be instantly good. China as a whole is bad at fps games because shooting people in videogames isnt something the ccp wants to give to the population. Wait a few years of valorant being out and they'll start dominating everyone like they did in league of legends, unlike eu or na (regions that have shooters like cod and csgo) china has very limited access to these. They have to build their skills from the ground up instead of just switching games.
"Wait a few years of valorant being out and they'll start dominating everyone"
This statement is simply incorrect. Same thing was said about Chinese teams in CS 1.6 and CS:GO , and they had max 2 competitive teams (placing in top20 ranking) over 15 years (with some breaks), called wNv Gaming and Tyloo. They won 3 S-tiers events over 20 years.... combined ..... even though there was so much hype behind them
It is already proven that Chinese teams usually have a hard time in tactical first-person shooters, even when they are on the same level playing field (which was the case with CounterStrike 1.6 for a long time).
There are small chances that things will change in Valorant, since the same fundamentals are usually applied.
China should definitely open their competitive scene and get some slots, but I do tend to agree that 3 is too much. However, it is understandable since this is a Tencent owned company.. You can't blame them for forcing it a little bit.
Either way, competitive integrity is not something that Riot prioritized when creating the Partnership system... so it should not come now as a surprise
Really doesn't matter whether they deserve the slots or not. The whole point of franchising was money both for the org and for the players - if you really look at it this is a very positive thing, it's a great way to speed up development of a region who's valorant is releasing 3 years after it did globally. Its making up for that gap. Also I'd say at least EDG deserves spots, they'd be the 2nd best in pacific for sure.
Chill bro the game just got officially released last december. It's gonna take some time before the valo esports scene in china heats up. Before the released last year in december, they even had to physically go to Taiwan or Hong Kong in order to set up a bootcamp and play the game or use some VPN despite the ping issues.
Pretty small sample size, doesn't say much. If you've watched their actual matches you'll know there's a lot more to it, their games are often VERY close. Even some 100T fans thought EDG was the better team despite losing that matchup at LockIn. And some of EDG's clutches are champions-level - they've got the potential, just need more experience and discipline.
Not at all. EDG rolled through LCQ east Asia, destroying teams like ONS who’s core is now Gen G. Gen G are currently 2nd in the pacific region so EDG are arguably better then the 2nd seed in pacific. I just think they lack discipline and dont have been set strategy’s. This can be easily fixed with proper experienced valorant coaching staff.
