Ardiis says he thinks '60% of coaches are frauds'
do you think he's chatting shit, or does he have a point?
compared to regular sports coaches (football, basketball etc) probably yeah kinda right tbh. the coaching role just hasn't had much time to develop it's mostly just former players who aren't good enough anymore. We've had some excellent coaches and those teams probably would not have won without them (potter, mini, etc) but overall the coaching impact in valorant is probably a lot less than pep guardiola or someone of that level
I wouldn't say frauds just not as impactful as we're used to "coaches" being just because the role hasn't been developed enough yet overall. If esports are still going strong in 20+ years I imagine it will be similar
a football coach is basically a manager of 20-30 players, maybe even close to 50 if u count the B team, has a staff of 10+ people and football just has different dynamics, the most important piece in most esports and specially FPS will remain the IGL, there are are excepcional coaches like b1ad3 in CS but u cant perform miracles without an IGL u can trust in game, every b1ad3 needs his aleksib or boombl4 and players like s1mple/elec/perfecto calling too
100% agree, I think the mark of a good coach is someone who can be top of the game with a different roster and in a different meta. There are some coaches who get lots of praise for doing really well with 1 roster in 1 meta and then never do anything good again (cough bzka and chet cough)
Some examples of actual good coaches
Potter
Alecks (I know he gets lots of hate but when PRX look good its because of the set plays and pre strats-also its an achievement to get as high places as they do consistently)
Termi (I hate him for cutting my goat but cant deny every iteration of DRX has been a top team-also DRX/VS were known for their set plays)
Doombros
Mini
Coaches that could be good but need to see more consistency
Kaplan
Solo
Muggle
Fr0d
Zikz
shit in 2023 is making all 3 intls, making top 3/4 in 1, and losing out 2 VERY close games to the 4th best and 5/6th best team in the second, and losing another 2 VERY close games to the 5/6th and 3rd best team in the third
shit in 2024 is dominating and losing 2 single elim games to the best emea team and 2nd best team that year
ok bro
lets be honest NaVi wasnt even close to challenging for an international title that season regardless of placement, there was no worlds they would have won tokyo or any other event, also EMEA was a disgrace back then, making top3-4 in 2023 EMEA is the bare minimun for any half decent team at an international level like that NaVi, just look at the rosters and how teams other than Fnatic performed internationally, the level was just really poor
