I know most VLR users can’t read, but for those who can, do you have any book recommendations? I just finished “The Silent Patient” (which I highly recommend) and don’t know what to read next. I am thriller/mystery type of person, but I am opened to really anything.

How's it compared to "the way of king" ? need to choose between one.

I think it depends solely on whether you like Sanderson or not. For me, I can't honestly stand his style. Also name of the wind is very highly rated but the trilogy is not finished and likely won't be finished soon (if ever) , so beware before starting. Personally its one of my favourite high fantasy series.

I read an abridge version really long ago, I heard it’s the be of the most influential “sci-fi” books. I think I need to read the real thing, especially with how big its cultural impact is.

“Four Bullets, Four Witnesses, Four Liars: The True Story of a Murder and the Trial That Followed” by Brian Barrie

It’s based on a real murder trial in Canada. It’s a very interesting read.

I'm interested in reading more Crime/Thriller/Mystery books instead of just nonfiction. Can you recommend any?

#20

if you want straight mystery, any Agatha Christie book, especially the Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Shutter Island is a great mystery/thriller. “The Secret History” is a must read. “The Eight” is another good one. I know you said not nonfiction but “Leviathan Wake” is so good. It’s a sci-fi noir.

If you like thriller/mystery you'd probably like the girl with the dragon tattoo. and the original sherlock holmes novels by arthur conan doyle

I’ve read the original Sherlock Holmes, I’ve been meaning to read Girl with Dragon Tattoo. I started reading it a while ago, i think I was too young to totally get into the book. I need to try reading it again.

Homestly, I have been trying to find a book like The Secret History. I haven’t found anything yet. Maybe try The Goldfinch, it is written by the same author.

if you want to get ahead on potentially the next fantasy movie franchise, mistborn could be a good place to start

If you like long fantasy series my favorites are The Wheel of Time (gets slow in books 7 & 8 but worth it), Malazan Book of the Fallen, and Stormlight Archives if you're okay with the series not being finished yet. If you want to go with a horror book I absolutely loved House of Leaves, but go for a physical copy if you do try it. It's a weird experience so try to go in blind

I mostly only read fantasy or classics so if you're interested in reading classics Id suggest all of jane austen first, and if fantasy then go for the usual suspects first like asoaif, kkc then progress to malazan etc

If youre fine with webnovels, then try reading

  • Lord of The mysteries / Lord of mysteries
  • Shadow slave

Both are masterpieces, probably the best piece of fantasy literature that i have ever read

I think that it could seriously help someone, but there's no chance in hell it helps me. I thought that the tips James Clear gives are very surface level and I felt mad reading the book. It felt like if I was trying to get some real advice, then I was getting slapped in the face by the shear amount of useless info and tips I was reading. But I just know that it wasn't going to work for me so maybe I hated it more due to my bias. But I think that it does have the potential to help someone.

#86
Dreoxx
1
Frags
+

like you said, its very surface level which helped a ton since i was at my lowest and maybe i felt that it helped more than it should have since anything really helped haha

if one wasn't too complacent with their life or having too much trouble, this book doesn't seem like your best bet, you'd be better off grinding through career-specific books or philosophy

#87
Marty

its great that it helped you, tbh I read it as part of a competition for my school so that probably added to my indifference.
