any readers? Im currently on chapter 1187 and god this series is sooooo good but i rarely see people talking about it. LOTM for example is way more talked about even thou SS places higher in many popularity and even rating rankings. Hell LOTM is even getting an anime adaptation, where is this love for SS? Seriously a Shadow Slave anime would go so hard especially in the visuals if done well, shit might be one of the best series ive ever read worldbuilding-wise

🤣🤣 Is that manga manhwa or light novel? The only thing i read right now is overlord LN. I used to read Solo leveling but realized midway that it is a piece of crap. MC too op and has no personality. I didn't even watch the anime when it came out.
Judging from the title "Shadow Slave" i can guess it is similar to Solo leveling?

its a webnovel. It is similar in a lot of ways but believe me its WAY better, not even close. I like solo leveling but i cant argue with anything you just said. Shadow Slave the MC is really strong but not unreasonably so + he has lots of personality, in fact he has so much personality he pisses me off sometimes but i still really like him nonetheless, he's a great character. SS premise is cliche and saturated but believe me the actual story and plot is anything but, i never fucking know what is gonna happen

I read LOTM and i like it's worldbuilding but i heard SS has multiple character POVs and i think i don't have the mental capacity to follow it if i can only read 1-2 chapters a day

nah bro at least where i am right now it has been pretty much the MC POV the entire time with some rare and very brief exceptions. I havent read LOTM maybe i should one day

It's not as bad as you think. There's only been like 40 or 50 other POV chapters in all 2200 chapters so far. There are so few that I can't even remember how many there are.

I read up to chapter 1200 and dropped it.

The novel isn't bad, but the MC's personality made me lose the desire to continue. Of course, it wasn't the only reason, but that decision to (spoiler) commit suicide along with his friends/team members, instead of taking 5 spots on a ship that could fit millions of people, was the last straw.

I understand what you are saying but i dont really agree. Sunny knew he would live anyway so him taking a spot on the ship made no sense. As for the others i mean i agree its a bit unrealistic for people to sacrifice themselves for random strangers but isnt that essentially what they were doing since the beginning anyway? Risking their lives to save the people of Antarctica? I personally like these slightly unrealistic but believable moments of sacrifice in stories a lot, but i can relate to your feelings

They didn’t sacrifice themselves for random strangers; they sacrificed themselves for no one. I don’t hate sacrifices, but only when they make logical/narrative sense, like (spoiler) Klein’s sacrifice in LOTM.

Their sacrifice didn’t make sense there. Believe me, if they had stayed inside the ship to help maintain internal order and external security for MILLIONS of people, they would have saved far more lives than those supposed five.

Of course, there’s the whole moral dilemma about them taking away the opportunity from five innocent people, but even that doesn’t convince me. I mean, there are millions of people inside the ship, it’s unrealistic that they couldn’t handle five more.

Anyway, I barely even remember that part of the story anymore since I dropped that novel years ago. By the way, if you like western web novels, I recommend Mother of Learning to you. The protagonist’s morality in Learning is similar to Sunny’s in the sense that they try their best to save innocents, but it’s much less irritating and makes way more narrative sense.

Probably the first English original or western webnovel after tbate to be this popular. I have heard about it a lot. And is it similar to all those English progression fantasy novels that try copying Chinese novel idea? What's it's genre? And is it not getting web comic like tbate got?

nah TBATE is good. The first 80 or so chapters are kinda mid but everything after that is actually really good, the story matures a lot

No it's not. The world building is extremely good and after the first arc, it's really good. What don't you like about it?

world building is the only thing it has going for it, the plot is garbage and the characters are garbage

Ok yeah some of the characters are horrible but there are a lot of good characters as well. I think the fight scenes are well described as well, and it has decent pacing too. I think it's really good.

the way the romance is built in this novel pisses me off however in terms of world building and power system it is amazing compared to other novels

i enjoy the slow-burn type romance a lot, but only when i can sprint through the chapters and read as many of them as i want. Im gonna be really sad if i get to the weeklies and shit is stagnated still

#23

the slow burn is great, but im mainly talking about how sunny gets wishy washy asl at moments in terms of character, sunny is either solid or very hypocritical as a character, meanwhile i like how nephis' character is growing with the new chapters

#32

YES BRO OH MY GOD Sunny is a really good character but sometimes he does blatantly out of characther things because the author wants him to be somewhere or do something he shouldnt and instead of coming up with good excuses he just makes Sunny look hypocritical. Its frustrating but i can overlook it because its really the only annoying thing i noticed so far, everything else is really good

Wait I started reading it last month then a thread pops up here??? Why is my life outside vlr chasing me here??? Also yeah I started reading SS in mid Feb and I am up to date now. Also they have a manhwa in the works for shadow slave, possible later this year. I was like reading 150 chapters a day. I finished forgotten shore in 3 days and then I never slowed down with it. It's really good.

damn bro 150 chapters a day is absolutely insane 😭💀, i cant blame you thou its really that good. Forgotten Shore especifically is so fucking peak its crazy. The end had me flabbergasted staring at my screen for 10 minutes straight

Yeah it had me shocked too. I got spoiled a bit by accident but I never expected nephis to use that in the way she did. Do you hate cassie for what she did? I personally never held it against her and she is one of my favourite characters rn, especially for the reveal that happens around chapter 1550. She is such a cool character but I know a lot of people in the SS community hate her with a passion.

nah bro it never bothered me that much as well, i always liked her. Of course i understand Sunny's hatred towards her for that but that doesnt mean i should feel the same. I thought Sunny would never get over what she did but i really liked how the author slowly made him forgive her without him even realizing

Bro the Antarctica arc is so peak too! It had a lot of well written horror. Some of the arcs really terrified me. Until around chapter 1200, there were no bad arcs imo.

yeah this is pretty accurate imo, i think some issues in some characters start to become apparent after chapters 1200-1300

you think the story gets worse as time goes on? thats kinda underwhelming, thou im inclined to agree the arc im at right now is maybe the worst one yet but its still good

Where are you up to right now? Is it the east Antarctica arc? It did slow down a bit and the next arc is a slow burn but has a great conclusion (I can't say more without spoiling). In around 400 chapters, the story switches vibes to a more chill and relaxed portion of the story, and this is seen as the weakest part of shadow slave so far. Once again it's really hard to describe without spoiling but a summary would be: where you are to around 1200 is ok, the next 30 chapters after that are also a bit slow. Then something happens at around 1230, and the story really slows down till around chapter 1300. It picks up a bit until the conclusion of the arc at chapter 1550 to 1580, which is the climax of the next arc and it's a really good conclusion to it. Then from around chapter 1600 till 1800 it's a lot slower with some interesting parts, and then from chapter 1800 till 2200 the story begins to pick up again and there is a lot of action from 1800 to 2200. I hope I didn't spoil anything for you, and my memory might not be 100% correct but this is my rundown on how the rest of the chapters up until the latest goes. But even the low points like where you are at now are still really good, and you should just enjoy whatever you are reading now. The story doesn't necessarily get worse but there are some weaker parts and honestly it depends on what you like. I personally loved all of it and was hooked the whole time, so it's not bad at all. Like I said, enjoy it while you can because it's all really good.

yeah mordret has so much aura.

from what he did in the 2nd nightmare to what he is up to in the current chapters post chapter 2100, he is probably top 3 scariest characters in the story so far. he is my GOAT

Quite rare that a non kr story is getting a manwha adaptation. Only seen the beginning after the end till now get one. It's surprising since most non kr stories are written and posted in webtoon. Any other western or non Korean and non japanese stories that have been adapted to manga or manwha?

I have been stacking since chapter 2136. Started reading around June last year and loved it!
It has its flaws obviously, but it is so CONSISTENTLY good and the author (G3) does a lot of experiments in the story, which I value a lot since it fills the novel with personality. Not only is Shadow Slave (SS) incredibly stunning with its worldbuilding, lore (YES, LORE), and main cast, it is also quite an easy read due to the author's word choice and sentence structure (some may find it ordinary which I understand, but I do value writing simplicity in fantasy stories - although I do have some exceptions since I am liking Lord of the Mysteries a lot!).
I know I am glazing SS a lot, but I recommend to everyone who has an itch for fantasy and for fights. The powers are so diverse and the scaling is mostly done very well, thus making fights not have predetermined outcome from the get-go.
However, I will say for the Power Fantasy peeps that SS is NOT a power fantasy novel. The protagonist is not the strongest and will never be the strongest in a world so filled with mysterious entities like SS (much like Klein in Lord of the Mysteries). SS values preparation, information gathering, analysis, and quick thinking in fights which was a breath of fresh for me at the time.
In summary, I love SS and I love to introduce people to it! I think it makes for a very fun read :)

PS: For those that do not mind slight spoilers and want to get a feel for the SS universe atmosphere (Dark Fantasy - Dark Souls-esque) I recommend checking out the OSTs published by Griffin Tyler on YouTube)

cause LOTM already ended. ofc the ongoing series will place higher. SS is good but it gets repetitive with its prose and jokes
