I don't understand these complains. Tier 1 is barely or not even profitable, of course Riot is going to need as much as they can get for tier 2. SEA fans constantly complain about Riot prioritizing Korea, saying Jake Sin is bias but they try to get sponsors for tier 2 and y'all still complain. If you cared so much about your scene, just watch it on SOOP.

you want to squeeze tier 2 and get all te money from tier 2, but at the same time you give less cake to TIer 2, how is that make sense
Guys, WHAT IF, SEA is just so unprofitable to the point that riot would take SOOP's money even though they know the viewership will dip?
My take on this is its either :
- Even when they merge the region it's still very unprofitable.
- SOOP's money is so big that no matter how large the viewership is it's not beating SOOP's money.
That's what we all saying. They're going do do literally ANYTHING including KILLING THE VIEWERSHIP with SOOP exclusivity just to get money.
If that's not greed i don't know what else you called that. But i guess they never give a fuck about increasing the viewership in the first place since they have Japan to carry APAC with 0 efforts from them.

Look, riot isn't stupid, for a company that hinges a lot on viewership and ultimately skin sales, under normal circumstances this deal shouldn't even reach anywhere near Jake sin's table. No one but riot themselves know how deep of a problem the situation in SEA is.
Of course they're scared. Not Riot kr, but Riot as a whole. Do you think it's because Koreans are jealous? No. It's because Riot will never make a dime in Asia when that happened. There's no broadcast rights revenue in esports, so all Riot can make is from selling skins, which no one will buy when SEA gets cocky. Riot desperately wanted China to succeed. To sell skins. Dude, esports are free to watch. Viewership, no matter how much it is, doesn't create value in and of itself. Riot only makes money from kiddos who watch and get excited and spend money on the game, not from game watchers. VP is their only income! how many SEA kids do you think are going to pay $50 for a skin?
Esports doesn't have a revenue model in the first place. Of course Korea, the only LAN league, even Japan with its fanatics, groans in the red in Tier 2. SOOP's example is actually closer to a healthier revenue model: traditional sports make money by selling broadcast rights.

This entire thread seems to be extremely emotionally driven. I think its better to look at this more objectively and talk about the real issue… if this deal is financially driven which it seems like it is, if the sea region doesn’t have enough sponsorship, commercial deals to stay afloat then this deal with Soop is maybe the one the fill the gap. riot games is also probably looking for long term sustainable and whats best for the regions esport health. If this deal can provide the financial and infrastructural support necessary to grow the sea region, its probably a strategic sacrifice in the short term for the greater good of the competitive scene. Instead of looking at this as a move that prioritizes one region over another, it might be more productive to consider how it could actually help SEA esports build up the resources it needs to thrive long term
Well if the Thai Tier 2 scene’s viewership has dropped since being sold to SOOP, then it's definitely concerning (and im sorry to hear that), but I think it’s important to remember that this decision was likely made to keep the competitive scene alive in the first place. If the region doesn’t have enough resources or sponsorships to support itself, this might be one of the few ways to make sure it’s financially feasible to even have the thai or sea league running in the first place.
I totally understand that viewership is crucial to building a fanbase and scene, but if the choice is between no competitive scene or trying something like this to keep it afloat, I think it's worth prioritizing the latter. Maybe it's not perfect now, but it could help ensure the scene has a chance to grow and recover in the future. You know? But i get the frustration.
