Why is 1.9 so hated?

I don't understand why people hate 1.9 so much. As someone who is much better at 1.8 pvp I still prefer the new combat system. I think it's more fun and skillful on top of that 1.9 gave us the most fun item in the game (the elytra) and off handing which is very useful. Maybe it's because I didn't play back then so I never experienced it first hand but can someone explain why people hate the update?

if people had been forced to switch they probably would come around to it but minecraft lets you chose what version you play, they've never even tried it for more than like an hour or so

They did that on Runescape and the game died so hard that they released a split version from way back in 2007 and now it's like 10x more popular than the "Original" Runescape with the dogshit combat lol

Well not only is the combat system disliked, but many people think the elytra broke the game. It rendered all other means of transportation completely obsolete.

I hate being this guy but you can always not use it. It's not like other games with op item where you're gonna be at a disadvantage if you don't use. I'm actually someone that prefers using horses over elytras and I like to make the best horse possible even if I have an elytra.

That's a good point for like single player but in multiplayer servers people will race to the end, and monopolize them. So now you are at a disadvantage.

Yeah I didn't think about that. Whenever I play multiplayer it's either with friends and we do things together or it's pvp. I've never played on a random smp so Idk what that's like

Afaik most smp owners (atleast competent ones) either ban elytras or make it so the end is closed until x so no one person can speedrun to the end and steal all the elytras. There are also plenty of mods/plugins/datapacks that fix this issue

1.9 combat system is ass because nerds will just use stone axes instead of actual swords and still deal a shit ton of damage
it doesnt require any skill at all

I agree with a lot of the points people have already said but I wanted to include one more thing. 1.8 is really easy to get into (just point at the enemy and spam click) but really hard to get really good at (ie: butterfly/ jitter) and I think this is the perferred skill progression for most players. Compare this to 1.9, which has many more variables and concepts which make it harder to start (shield, attack speed, axe, crystals, etc) but once your good at it it’s pretty easy to improve.

TLDR:
1.8 easy to pickup, hard to master
1.9 hard to pickup, easier to master

I started playing after so it doesnt effect me but I love newer versions of combat-I mean elytra is my favorite thing in the game, riptide trident as well is very fun
