Franchising is killing Tier 2

oxygen left, acend left, falcons left, maybe other orgs will follow, all because of franchising. views are down, players are easily scoped, even if you get into franchising you can just be one and done, literally what is the point for tier 2 teams to hang around with 1 slim chance of making it through?

there is no point

you leave, come back before ascension, drop a bag on the best roster, hope they win and carry you to tier 1 and riot accepts you

if not, you leave the system, don't pay people for months, and try again next year

I have mixed feeling about this, if every big org leavee, that mean, any big org can come in a region, buy best player and secure an easy ascension, in short term org might not understand it yet, but in long term, when org will realize T1 is almost free more org will invest into T2.
And to be honest I kinda like T2 having a sense of amateurism, if it's the case that make ascention almost accessible for every high immo player and his friend. And let's be honest, in Europe we have a lot of mid tier org that is perfect for the current not expansive T2 system

these mid orgs are struggling to make ends meet bro

It's kinda rare to have esport structure not loosing money, even in the T1, if thats the case thats sad but they have to pay less T2 player, (but I agree Riot should give more money to T2 team)

CS isn't losing money tbf, plenty of prize pools even at tier 2

Wdym not losing money? Lots of orgs are losing money, cs just has large prize pools because valve and gambling sponsors dropping the bag

well and that somewhat keeps the teams afloat. as cynic as it can sound, bookmakers are keeping tier 2 alive. I know for a fact that they can keep a top 50 team afloat and provide them great salaries (as per RachelR, a russian streamer who owns Insilio)

Most gambling sponsors only give the big bucks to big orgs and famous teams (popular streamer teams, teams that have had a long time in the community, teams that are winning lot etc.) And smaller teams like a top 50 team that isn't popular and isn't winning would not receive the big bucks from draft kings or whatever. Realistically all orgs run off of sponsor money through streamers and name and sponsors have started to pull out of esports as they realize most fans are not going to be buying their product. We are heading towards a franchise and sports betting heavy esports scene as that is the most sensible way to keep the scene afloat.

well riot have franchise, cs has betting, I am sure we aren't far off subs for like a few dollars to view games in higher quality and at the cast of your preference

Idk abt premier tho, to me it sucked a lot for japan because orgs with better clout and Financials will get imports (there'snot even any guaranteethat they'll do good), thank God this is no longer the case.

So it's hard to see any breakout players, not to mention advance phase are oftentimes barely streamed which makes things worse for japanese players, do you know how many hours I've spent at twitter clips, vlr stats and valtracker just to look for some breakout players from Japan? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Japan just get expanded, so that makes things harder

I should be happy that more teams means more japanese players are getting the spotlight, but then I found out that some of the players that I've been looking at apparently are korean now I'm slightly disappointed πŸ˜‚.

At least it's 3x8 = 24 new JP player !

After the expantion it gonna be easier, because you will have more T2 data for 16 best teams

You know what it's not 24 , some teams actually go with 1 korean, some teams that are known to import ( blue bees) actually go full japanese and they're actually killing it, this is a good improvement from the previous split. Now I'm slightly happy again πŸ˜‚

Many BIG Orgs will eventually leave the Valorant scene in the future, the system is bound that way.

true, but how many orgs can you realistically let go?

take a look at NA
eg had to disband their roster because they didn't go for the pay cut
sentinels needed cash injections
100t admit that they wouldn't go into esports if they started from scratch
c9 are working on a budget
nrg had chet taking a cut to fit in ethan and demon1
mibr spent money on CS
loud were struggling

honestly they could probably save tier 2 by saying fuck it to regional leagues and all that bullshit, make an open circuit with points for ascension, allow for gamba money to be used and let Betboom, 1Win and Paribet run the tier 2 ecosystem, Riot says gamba money is dirty but they had no problem letting LoL on the EWC so why even care, gamba keeps CS afloat and its probably the healthiest esport scene with a lot of people making a living playing the game even without playing for tier 1 teams

Regionnal league are what carrying EMEA, that give a sense of identity, and make people support team from their region, but you can keep tht system and still have circuit point (That what they will do IIRC)

#23

maybe if you are lucky and come from a region with strong esports support and infrastructure like France or Germany, for the rest of us its Rinascimento closing, Portugal closing, Polaris and East getting smaller and smaller and MENA having the only org drope their roster, Riot doesnt publicize and do anything to support healthy growth of regional leaguer and just hopes the pre-existing fanbase for esports will just magically tune in, this can only work in France or Germany, if we had a single open circuit for the whole of EMEA you could still have regional teams for people to root for but atleast you allow players to have agency for themselves via good prize pools and costant play with good teams instead of beinjg locked in regions where often its just 1 team running the show and the others getting farmed

Italia and Portugal closing is a good thing, the population isn't enough big to be a T2 league, while we have a policy that ensure they are at lesat 1 IT and one PT team in the T2 (Has I say in one of my video), this is beneficial for Italian and Portugal, it's far better to have 1 or 2 team competing in a more competitive league, than having a not competitive T2 league compared to other T2 league and getting gaped in ascension.

To me Polaris show us the good way to do it, Rinascimento and PT T2 league, should now become a T3 league in the same way Polaris did with their national league.

So basically what I want for every league :

  • Definition of Subretion inside a Tier 2 region (Between 3 and 8 subregion)
  • Ensuring every subregion have at least 1 team in the T2
  • Every subregion having their own T3 national league

Yea lets add more and more steps, more and more leagues with 500 euros cash prizes where the only thing keeping you going is the promise to maybe be able to compete with other players for 1-2 spots in your regional roster in the actual tier 2 league, there's so much strain you can put on orgs and players before they decide "fuck this shit, imma finish uni or start working as a bricklayer", people need money to survive and people arent surviving on pipe dreams, only a very small percentage of players will be able to climb up the ladder, adding more and more leagues just bottlenecks progress of players instead of letting them compete freely in a circuit with more opportunity of gaining liquidity and exposure as a 5-man core instead of just getting poached out of your best player every 6 months or so

The T3 league isn't here for money, it's an amatory league, people are not supposed to earn money in it,
Keep in mind that T3 is optional, you can still qual to T2 threw premier and you don't have to play T3 if you want to qual to T2, thats not another bottleneck, and thats not turning premier in T4

if you think the cycling of players through tier 2 through 1 is fast enough to let people have actual careers then this could work, but I have zero faith in franchising actually pushing teams to cycle through talent, there is no way to prove Tier 2 players against tier 1 oppossition, no way for upcoming teams to show their potential if not by dredging through an amateur league playing for free and without getting actual good practice cause tier 1 teams only platy tier 1 teams and tier 2 only plays tier 2, premier is not the solution and is only a mere bandaid to sell hope while the tier 1 teams stay on an island only because they paid money upfront.
I think you have good ideas and I think you really do believe this is a good way of doing things and I wish I could be as positive as you, but after following italian esports for years and watching us get burned in almost every esport we started to show promise because of franchising or franchise-like decisions (Rainbow Six) I just cant believe in this system anymore, especially seeing how open circuit esports like CS and Dota fostered successfull scenes in places you wouldnt expect (Dota 2 in Jordan/Lebanon and Peru, CS in Mongolia and Brasil)

"there is no way to prove Tier 2 players against tier 1 oppossition"

Ascention ! I think one way to another we will go to 16 team, and maybe 4 ascension spot so more T2 vs T1 and this will be interesting

"I just cant believe in this system anymore, especially seeing how open circuit esports like CS and Dota fostered successfull scenes in places you wouldnt expect (Dota 2 in Jordan/Lebanon and Peru, CS in Mongolia and Brasil) "

Sadfully they where not able to develop in every country, (Seems it's kinda also bounded to where your place your server), Colombian server might help Peru. I believe any country that have a population of +10M people should have their Subregion (And so a T3 league + Spot in T2), beside UNdevelopped region (Subsaharia, MENA, South Asia) cause it's a little bit too early (And probably a ceil of 100M hab to not make a T3 that is too big)

using my geographic stats the result is something like that
https://imgur.com/I0wcqbJ

I'm optimistc because I see solutions, and I see that Leo learn from his mistake. I'm optimistic because to me, the mixed system was always the best system because it allow us to have stability in the Tier 1, but keep cinderella story from the tier 2 (The main pb here is that asc have only 2 spot, thing would be better with 4)

Red = Not sure if it should exist
Cyan = Can be place in another way
Yellow = Subregion of a nation that is too big to have only one subregion

It was more fun man but unfortunately most viewers here are from post-franchising era so they think everything was crumbling back then.
We had beautiful storylines like Sentinels getting knocked over in open quals by bunch of no-namers with a funny team name. The TSM and other big orgs rivalry even though TSM never was a top team but still they could play each other.
Everybody had a chance , nobody was considered T2 and we saw runs like KRU champions 2021, Zeta division putting Japan on map, Vision strikers winning 56+ matches in a row only to lose when it mattered the most- the first masters qualification.
You can't have such stories anymore...

i did start watching val esport when 2022 master reyjkjavic start but never knew care about the system and challenger stuff
Heck i dont even know vlr exist until lock in

Honestly just one look how pre-franchise seems to be way better system for the teams
Especially the teams variant
