Valorant map design team

The best 4 maps in Valorant are undoubtedly Haven, Ascent, Split and Bind. Which are coincidentally the first 4 maps released. Since then it's been incredibly hit or miss. Fracture and Lotus are alright, but Fracture is incredibly annoying to play outside of a coordinated environment. Sunset would be decent if not for the B main post plant. Other than that it's been total stinkers. Icebox is ok to play but a fuckin snoozefest to watch. Breeze is actual mega cancer and I'd rather stick my dick in a cheese grater than ever touch that map again. Pearl was ass for the longest time. And now Abyss looks total shit.

Which begs the question as to what happened to the map design team. Did they start doing crack since the game came out? Wtf are they on?

valorant higher ups told them to "be more colorful" and now they added better color palettes but the actual map design is shit

they started out safe with cs style maps, and then tried branching out with unique designs but forgot that cs maps are the way they are for a reason, and reinventing the wheel is pointless. now we're left with a bunch of overcooked maps that barely function.
it's so weird to me that they don't appear to design maps around the utility on them, imo its completely stupid that there are 2 maps in which the dome smokers (4/6) simply can't be run solo because the map inherently isn't designed for their abilities. why make most smokes one size then chokes/ important sightlines that need to be smoked that are wider than the smokes are
their whole design philosophy is so flawed and is definitely closer to "lets try something new and hope its alright" than "lets try something that we know would work and be enjoyable"

In the val map designers' defence tho, peeps before (especially when val was still fresh and new) kept comparing val maps to cs maps - most criticisms stating that the val maps looked more like 'hallway simulators' than actual maps compared to cs maps. So perhaps, in an effort to make the succeeding maps look more 'organic' and like what you said more gimmicky, they designed maps that's stylistically well but functionally awful. And that just didn't solve the problem- and until now, riot is still struggling to find the right balance. Nonetheless it's just funny how players back then complain that the maps look dogshit and boring, but now players gripe on the newer maps because of the dogshit gameplays and tactics they propagate.

Both bind and split have gone through heavy adjustments since their release, they are not the same maps as when they were released.

I mean the basic skeletons on the maps are still there, and the changes are minimal enough to still say that they're fundamentally the same maps as when they released. When it's mostly just a few boxes or one or two positions that get changed a map doesn't really become a new map

Icebox, Breeze, Lotus, and Bearl are better than Split. Split is so hard to play in ranked with random teammates. Only good when watching it on VCT.
