Is the ban of tiktok really that deep?
As someone outside of america who doesn't admittedly use tiktok it doesn't seem that big of an issue to me
(I use insta reels and sometimes youtube shorts which are effectively the same thing, no?)
shrike- [#2]just use ig reels or yt shorts, it’s not really that deep
yeah, thats exactly what I was thinking, but I've kept on seeing people on social media going on and on about it
Denjisideals [#3]I mean they banned it here 5 years ago so we chilling
Never really understood the appeal of Tiktok anyways
who is we bro you are talking about India banning tiktok, not America 😭😭😭
Prasinos [#7]Most of YT shorts and reels come from Tiktok.
Yes it is a big deal, bc Tiktok prioritize "minor" creators, while the others dont.
So a big amount of content/trend will he lost.
also the censorship part, and livelihoods are being affected.
it’s more like the principle of the whole thing rather than the actual app.
FlyDeuS [#9]Can't answer legit. I don't use tiktok. However, from what i've heard the bill used to ban it has some very choice language which could be not good long term. I will be doing more research when I have off time.
hmm that's interesting. I'm going to look in to that further too
best probably not to discuss that further here since that creeps in to politics which isn't allowed here
yukky [#13]my tiktok shop pro club t shirts 💔
Check out Shein and AliExpress. They are the same stuff
jawn [#12]tiktok is currently the most dominant cultural force on the internet, it kinda is that deep
but what's to say they can't do the same thing on reels? or any other equivalent service. That's what I don't get
Gemiknight [#11]not really, although the only argument i've heard from people against the ban is that people/businesses who mainly used tiktok to advertise would have to switch to other apps.
"Artists" don't put food on the table.
I had seen a lot of protests from these guys, I find this miserable, bc there is many other things that they could protest in this topic, but they only protest in the part that will effect their money.
Aayan [#17]but what's to say they can't do the same thing on reels? or any other equivalent service. That's what I don't get
that's usually how that culture dies, snap culture started dying when instagram introduced stories
FrenchToast [#14]also the censorship part, and livelihoods are being affected.

censorship? this ain't what censorship is 😭

the whole point of it was for them to get rid of tiktok so meta becomes more used bcos the senators invested alot in meta. its basically make the rich richer bcos they have the power to control what the ppl use. theyve already banned books bcos it made ppl educated on topics that make america look bad and now a massive social media platform full of education and all types communities bcos 9 of them want more money.

prasinos im starting to wonder if ur just really good at baiting or ur really fucking stupid
uwukitten [#27]censorship? this ain't what censorship is 😭
definition of censorship(pertaining to the internet in this case)
may restrict access to materials that are already published such as access to certain websites, search engines, or other online content etc
this is literally part of censorship
shrike- [#2]just use ig reels or yt shorts, it’s not really that deep
considering how offended people get about stuff they see on twitter, i wouldnt recommend IG reels at all
jawn [#25]that's usually how that culture dies, snap culture started dying when instagram introduced stories
maybe it's because I've never really used tiktok but I really don't see how the same stuff can't continue on instagram, 'killing culture' seems like a huge overreaction to me

the ban is largely because tiktok is suspected of gathering data and giving it to china, censorship is if it was getting banned because it had media that the government didn't want you to see

i mean it's not like a deliberate silencing of tiktok culture in particular, i'm kinda talking about the aftereffects, internet will change forever because of it
malT-T [#29]prasinos im starting to wonder if ur just really good at baiting or ur really fucking stupid
Both, but really, I hadn't seen anyone from tiktok protest about this topic that isn't "This is a attack to art, destroying artists live".
And not "America is destroying a company bc they hadn't full control of it and want to control us".

its both bro and ive seen discourse on both. artists do put food on the table, the world needs artists and art. tiktok enabled the creation of it by providing an income source to artists. the banning of tiktok in america is an undoubtedly huge hit to artists. also people are allowed to protest when their income and way of life is taken away.
Hades_Loves_Rb [#37]I would speak but when I made a post about it and this bill it got taken down for politics...soooo
yeah I'm tryna avoid the whole political aspect of it (see #15)
but if someone starts a political shitshow in the comments I might be cooked
grisx23 [#19]No. YT shorts, and reels are better. YT is probably right as reels are filled with unhinged kids.
yt shorts are horrendous
Aayan [#39]yeah I'm tryna avoid the whole political aspect of it (see #15)

Fuck I typed out a whole response and then realized it was way too political
anyways

For me I like the ban because it protects our information and also I’m sick of all the brain rot and
Dumb shit that app has produced. The reason ppl are making sound controversial is because they believe the government has just swept away all the “TikTok Creators” job which part is true but I think if those creators are really so entertaining and talented then they should have no problem doing the same content in a different platform YouTube Shorts/Reels
uwukitten [#33]the ban is largely because tiktok is suspected of gathering data and giving it to china, censorship is if it was getting banned because it had media that the government didn't want you to see
real ones know the ban was lobbied for by american social media companies eg. meta to take down the competition, and as a way to keep the selling of data within the american ecosystem rather than chinese or international
uwukitten [#33]the ban is largely because tiktok is suspected of gathering data and giving it to china, censorship is if it was getting banned because it had media that the government didn't want you to see
bro how stupid can u be, no the ban isn't because tiktok is suspected of selling data its because tech billionares wanted ByteDance to sell to a US company. They can't create competition so they buy it off, but this time it didn't work. They've done this plenty before BYD cars, xiaomi phones etc. etc. they lit have no ground or evidence against it
suppressor [#36]algo on tt is unmatched, american engineers cant do the same. it definitely is a big deal - shit, even rednote is better than shorts and reels lol
idk what tiktok had because i never use it, but sometimes i get some cool stuff like this https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEVSFuGvA7U

well instagram doesnt pay its users so its just yt
LocoMonteiro [#31]considering how offended people get about stuff they see on twitter, i wouldnt recommend IG reels at all
1 more reason to go on ig reels then
31Raven [#51]1 more reason to go on ig reels then
ive been using it for more than 1 year so i would agree
