Was curious any of my fellow brethens on this site, who are still in 9ja?
I don't mean it in a racist way. I know grammar isn't everything and this is more of an American problem. Do you think it is accurate on how Hollywood portrays how a black guy speaks English? Like they say "I didn't do nothing wrong" This has double negative which means that he did something wrong. I know you are Nigerian so your english will be better grammatically than an American but still, doesn't it annoy you? I annoys me.
I see your point, really love questions like this that make me think on something I never thought about, First let me be clear that don't know much about african americans as they speak completely different from nigerians, Now most nigerians have good grammar but have two problems, which is they speak really fast and shorten words alot creating the dialect we call pidgin. Tbh too much focus on inclusion in media annoys me like you don't have to Include everyone but also doesn't mean that shows with only one group are good, for example always hated all those only black movies never made sense to me felt racist and not like defending racism. I don't agree with the way hollywood potrays their english and it does annoy me a lil bit as it's a message on the lack of good education for black guys which is true but they should calm it down.
Yeah, at some point it is a feedback loop where people see what people like them are speaking (slang) and use it themselves and use it so much that now it has become part of the language. I have personally observed this with me. I make fun of my mom for mispronouncing some words and use them incorrectly ironically. But then I end up using it so much that people on the outside might think that I don't know the correct word.
