Make a poweranking of the teams currently in Champions
I'll bookmark this thread and come back to it after Champions to see who had the most accurate list
This is going to be a pretty unpopular opinion but i didn't want my stars anyways: Valorant is in a state where any team is primed to take champions. looking at the way matches went in berlin and lcq (especially apac), you can tell that the regions (mainly japan and possibly SEA) that people think are worse are catching up fast. the two most damning cases being CR in berlin vs Gambit and Northeption running through the apac lcq. Teams are slowly getting more used to playing other regions, which is the best possible case for the scene. If there are already solidified top regions this early into the game then that leads to less interesting international events because you know who is most likely to take it. With closer skill gaps between regions it makes the matches more intense instead of just "oh look CR is getting 13-1ed by gambit again". Just my two cents tho.
Bro it was one map against gambit that was close they just underestimated CR because they 13-1d them two times before. I doubt gambit with full focus, fresh strats and 100% tryhard would go to OT against Crazy raccoon again
I understand a strong Asian region would be nice to see and probably they will get stronger with some time but right now matt is right you’re just overrating them. I would give Brazil higher chances to win against NA/EU
saying that the only reason CR was able to get to OT against Gambit is because they were caught off guard is just insulting to CR as a team. They went into the rematch with the resolve and drive to win and they played their hearts out. If there were to be another rematch between the two, which I don't think is very likely, then I honestly think CR might be able to take a map off of Gambit just because of the experience from the past sets. I think you are still underestimating CR, honestly. They have just as much of a chance at taking down NA or EU than Brazil does. Don't sleep on SEA or JP, they have been the ones that have surprised the most so far.
it wasn't just "one good map" though, they played a good first half on ascent AND on top of that they took down havan liberty in a 2-0, 13-8, 13-9 set. You saying they got rolled is once again downplaying their accomplishments at berlin. are the things they accomplished as great as winning the whole thing? no. But are these games a great example of a region slowly improving to be a dangerous contender for best region in the world? yes.
this list was made mathematically, based mainly on the most recent performance of each team. The number in () is the team's calculated Elo rating
https://www.remi-coulom.fr/Bayesian-Elo/ with every single round win in Berlin (2x weighted), S3 Challengers Finals and LCQ.
This are my power rankings list it will be mostly based on recent performances, rating teams like Fnatic and Secret will be difficult
1) Gambit- Best team in the world, won convincingly at Berlin. Does have a disadvantage when it comes being studied by other teams but I believe that Gambit wont be outdated like Sentinels was at Berlin and make some changes to stay ahead of the opponents.
2) Envy- Hardest position to decide but had to settle with NV, very convincing showing at Berlin and a lot of people will say they overperformed at Berlin but they didnt lose a single map till the grand finals and Yay might only get better from now. Also looking like a pretty strong LAN team
3) Vision Strikers- Played well at Berlin but lost to eventual winners, their bind does look pretty weak but I think they should either give Lakia more maps or just bench him, there is no point in giving a guy just 1 map only ruins team synergy and chemistry
4) SentinLs- Still a pretty strong team, can make changes in their comps now to do well in Berlin. Also I think they will work harder than they did last time.
5) Team Liquid- Won LCQ without losing a single game, look pretty strong in my opinion and Nivera only gets better from here, also their previous LAN experience should help them, placing them any higher would be a Liquid bias so I think 5th is good enough for now
6) Acend- Best operator player in the world, should work on team play better but I think they will work on improving their strats in the time they have and their prior LAN experience will be pretty good for them, clearly looked nervous last LAN
7) KRU- Played pretty decently at Berlin, I think they are the best team from South America
8) Full Sense - Winners of LCQ in APAC region, JohnOlsen and PTC are reallllyyyyyyy good
9) Fnatic - Hard to rate Fnatic here but they havent played in a really long time and their performances post Berlin are actually pretty bad, failing to make it to the qualifiers for Berlin, losing to TENSTAR
10) Vivo Keyd- Heat is a really good Jett player and recently happened to sign mwzera who most people consider to be the best player in Brazil.
11) Crazy Racoons- Their third LAN, wouldnt be too shocked if this was their redemption arc
12) Furia- Did win LCQ pretty convincingly, thrashing Australs in the Finals
13) Team Secret- Looked kinda bad in that tournament though that did have agent bans and shit which doesnt really happen at Champions
14) Vikings- Havent seen them play in a long time but got destroyed in Berlin qualifiers so yeah
15) X10- Bombed out of Berlin qualifiers, their star player patiphan hasnt played in ages, I think that might hurt their chances at Champions
this is a different mathematical ranking from the one above that takes into account all of Stage 3 VCT (and LCQ). This rewards consistency and long-term success (clarification: within stage 3) rather than one good tournament when determining the rankings. The number in () is the team's calculated Elo rating
Berlin games were given 3x weight, Challengers Finals and LCQs were given 2x weight and all other games got 1x.
Also, the current iteration of the formula uses rounds rather than maps. So since Envy's loss to Sen was two 13-11s, and then Envy beat Sen by more than that in the Berlin match (which also had higher weight), Envy got put above Sen. Also keep in mind that 8 elo points really isn't a lot at all
power rankings are rankings of their most recent success, over all of the VCT circuit for 2021 obviously Sentinels is the best NA team, but NV's rankings at Challenger's Finals and then Berlin and its win over SEN and 100T imo cements them as NA #1 especially with how little time they've had with Yay
(Gap left because realistically none of the teams below are going to win)
this game allows smaller regions to catch up really fast mainly because strats and the understanding of the game is not as difficult as some games like LoL.
Just by looking at the number of agents, the number of combinations possible of strats which also depends of the maps/sides, any region can easily catch up by 2022, VODs/LAN help them a lot. Iceland gap > Berlin Gap > Champions Gap > 2022 Gap.
In fact no region is dominant and everything will be different once Jett gets viable counter matchups. bye the One-trick jett main and shit
