I think it's totally understandable to be upset at someone's actions and hold them accountable and make sure they understand to never do it again and they have proper recourse levied against them. People should have consequences for their actions. However to completely deny any chance of them furthering their life beyond that and recovering and being a better person is not healthy. They should be able to get resources for help (which he might have) and learn from their mistakes and become better people, which all of us have done in the past. It might not have been to this extent, but it's part of being human.
