Unfortunately the goal of the org isn't always aligned with the players. And yeah, this post is partially blaming Riot for having this kind of discrepancy, seems like an oversight ngl. They're marketing ascension and tier 2 as this whole 'earn your self a spot in tier 1' type of thing but when shit like this happens it just takes away from it.
But yeah the players should've already known what they signed up to. It just sucks it has to be this way.
I think it could work in theory, it'll help local talent. Next year Spain Portugal and Italy are merging so it shouldn't be too hard. East covers a pretty large area, and I think Turkey and France easily have enough demand
edit:
even despite this I think 2 imports in tier 1 is more fun, some people may not like it but fair enough, but I personally enjoy seeing multiregional teams
IMO, teams shouldn't be able to field a team in any region that wouldn't be able to play in the VCT. It takes away spots from upcoming T2 players in these regions.
There's a limit, for example, Sengoku who had something and vici, two players who may have been imports, but only played in VCJ. Compare that to Chinese teams importing EMEA players so that they can try to get the VCT spot just to drop the player(s).
Limiting imports in t2 is only going to harm players since it affects system outside of your intended case.
We really havent seen imports (as in actual imports from other t1 regions) be an issue anywhere. Yes china has a good amount however I see this as hugely beneficial for the region to catch up (they have enough players that once the level is similar to other regions the local players will simply drown out the imports due to language issues).
Increasing imports for t1 is meh. Like I dont see this being an issue right now either, but if a region actually properly pulls ahead its going to be fatal for pro play, making it even harder for anyone to catch back up as imports eat up the other regions slots.
Given your criticism is directly related to kr1stals situation, why not tackle the actual problem? Russia being way too big to just be slapped onto EMEA, with ping in large parts of the country being unplayable.
Would splitting it up make sense? probably not either (logistical nightmare thats gonna get abused sooner or later and just be unfair) but it'd do a lot less harm than fundamentally changing how the entirety of t1/t2 work for a very small minority of players.
Yeah I completely agree, I would love to see some more imports in tier 1, I think it makes it feel more like a sport too. And yeah imports actually help grow a region in the short term so I don't think limiting them for tier 2 is ideal as you say. CIS should indeed have its own region, all of the cracked CIS talent is so decentralised which is super unfortunate, it's just because of the political situation which is why Riot is hesitant
O I was referring to a much more immediate solution of just saying "x region in Russia" is allowed to play in China/Apac (but cant in EMEA) without counting as an import, but ye giving them a whole t1 would be very nice too.
I dont think they got enough players for it to make sense though and political situations make it hard regardless
Oh yeah that could be a solution too esp. with CN, but I defo think there's enough demand/skill for their own t2 region (t1 would be impossible since the partner teams are locked in). Maybe I'm remembering with rose tinted goggles but I remember the Russian regional scene being really good back in 2021
