Europeans level of racism was much worse than what was already happening in those places. There were no indigenous tribes committed genocide or forcefully indoctrinating other cultures into their belief systems and ways of life by force. Spreading ideologies like that most definitely made racism worse. Just because bad things have happened in the past don't mean we shouldn't look on them in disgust and try to do better.
