I can honestly say I’m about 5”9’ 160-170lbs. In good shape etc. Never been overweight in my 28 years of life. Aaaaaaand....
I’ve barely ever eaten a single vegetable other than potatoes, peas, corn, and the odd piece of carrot in soup. I eat pizza usually once a day. Diet is overrated 😂 green stuff tastes terrible.
Pretty much, it's only calories that matter in terms of gaining/losing weight. You can eat "healthy" food regularly, but still be obese without any muscle mass if you simply eat too much and therefore exceed weekly calorie limit.
I grew up as an obese kid and my parents would regularly serve me chicken/turkey breasts, a lot of greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and stuff like that, but my portion control was whack. When I started going to uni, I discovered what calories are and basically went from obese to normal weight in a matter of 6 months. Calorie counting simply helped me limit my portions, whilst ironically I was out drinking alcohol and eating a couple slices of pizza and a small bag of crisps for a few months straight.
Yep, it’s harder with my kids now but I used to be pretty heavily involved in the gym and “diet control” but the diet was mostly just ensuring I got enough of the macros necessary to gain mass, enough calories, enough protein, etc.
But yeah, if you put yourself at a calorie deficit through portion control or exercise you’re going to lose weight regardless.
That’s not to say the unhealthy food I eat won’t eventually have a toll on my body through things like high cholesterol or plaque build up in my arteries (atherosclerosis). But for now, I’m young (relative to the real world I know I’m a boomer here) and healthy lol.
