Hate EWC?
This is a genuine question because I'm not really sure why there is such a large hateful connotation regarding ewc.
Is it because it's in Saudi?

they are accused of committing many human rights violations which include but are not limited to modern slavery, women's rights, restriction of free speech and war crimes. also associated with extremist groups allegedly, idk how much validity these allegations have. despite this, they still maintain close ties with many western countries including the US.

Is it because it's in Saudi?

Not that it's in Saudi, but the fact that it is hosted by, funded by, and sponsored by the Saudi Arabian Government with an intention to improve Saudi's reputation with all their ethical problems

In case you didn't notice - yes, it's connecting politics with the game. But it wasn't "us", the gamers, but the Saudi who did that.

When the government itself is involved, it is invariably political -- you can't disconnect the two at that point.

I think its moreso the fact that the event is directly funded by the Saudi government

It is an Issue in the sense that people do not like the Saudi regime who do some questionable stuff. Attending/watching a gov funded event and thereby contributing in some way to said government can definitely be seen as problematic. While alot of people probably dislike EWC just because it is a Saudi event, this is the issue for me. Other Governments, including western ones, do some very questionable shit, but when I go to watch e.g Masters Toronto, I dont directly financially contribute to the Canadian Government, if that makes sense.

When you stay in a hotel, buy tickets for the event, buy food, and then go the the cities atractions you are directly financially contributing to the Canadian Government.

I think it is a case of more direct (ie government-sanctioned event) vs indirect (ie the taxes the venue / organisers / hotel pay etc.). Hard to really define where the line is drawn, I guess?
