I just learned the 1$ bill equivalent to CAD is called a Loonie and the 2$ is Toonie. 🤦‍♂️such a silly country. Do you guys actually say that though? "That soda will be 1 Toonie" 😭 that can't be real right?

thats just what the coins r called. sometimes people would be like "you got a toonie?" but thats only if they specifically need the exact coin, otherwise youd just say "you have two dollars?" or "thatll be 2 dollars"

We only use the words loonie and toonie to refer to the coins themselves, not the actual amounts. You'd usually say "that'll be a dollar" or "I'm a dollar short"... but if you're asking for change or something, you'd ask for a loonie or a toonie because you're referring to the coin and not the value of it. Kind of like how you'd say quarter and 25 cents, or dime and 10 cents (there are other examples in other countries, but most places do this kind of thing).

Also, in case you're curious: the $1 coin is called a loonie because there's a loon on it (a kind of bird). As for toonies... well, two loonies = toonie.

Loonie and toonies are only referred in coins. But we don’t actually call a dollar or two dollars loonie or toonies.

But yes Canada is a silly country I agree.
