I think there should be a distinction between a players "value" and "percieved value".
I'll define both of terms as follows:
Value = a player's overall quality in game (overall impacts, frags, midrounding skills, etc) and outside the game ( monetary value, compatibily , adaptability, linguistic skills, etc)
Usually when people are talking about value a huge emphasis are placed on the in-game aspect while sometimes aspects that are outside the game are talked about as well.
Perceieved value = How people see you as a player, this includes whether people think you're good or not, how you impact the team, why people think you are important to the team or why people think you should join a team. Ultimately this is your brand.
A percieved value includes several states:
- underrated
- overrated
- unknown
- percieved to be bad
- percieved to be good
- etc
A percieved value should have been clear cut and in an ideal state there shouldn't have been a distinction between both terms, but:
- There are players that legit needed help and are stuck in T3 or being screwed by his surroundings or his team.
- Imports ( I'l explain this in another thread) and stigma
- Academy teams can't play in VCL (cmiiw)
- There are no vods
- Drama surrounding the player
Ultimately, I think it is very important for the players especially those in Tier 2 and below to take care of their percieved value, since mismanagement can hurt their career in the long run.
