I can see it working two ways:

it's just the top 2 at the end of Ascension but that will make the finals less interesting
The second-placed team at the end of Ascension has to play against the Ascension team which is ending it's 2 year tenure in VCT that year, this way you give the current Ascension team a second chance to re-qualify without needing to go through Challengers all over again

2nd option would make more sense competitively as G2 are doing well but to get relegated back to challengers while other teams are doing much worse just doesn't really make sense plus challengers wouldn't be fun as we now have like a world top 8 team in challengers of course they are probably gonna dominate
