Masters Reykjavik format revealed

Riot has revealed new details about Masters Reykjavik, which will feature a radical change from last year's format.

Unlike the 2021 Masters Reykjavik, this year's edition will include a group stage and a playoffs stage to crown its champion.

The group stage will place eight of the 12 participating teams in two four-team GSL groups. The remaining four teams will be automatically placed in the playoffs, as previously announced.

The two top teams of each group will advance to the playoffs. In the playoffs, a group stage team will be pitted against one of the four seeded teams. Teams from the same group being placed on opposite sides of the bracket to avoid early rematches.

Every match played in Iceland will be a best-of-three, with the exception of the playoffs' lower bracket final and the grand final, which will be best-of-five matches.

Masters Reykjavik runs from April 10 to 24. The first eight days of the tournament, until April 18, will host the entire group stage as well as the early rounds of bracket play, while the final rounds of the playoffs will run from April 22 to 24.

really love double elimination bracket gives us a variety of possibilities, but idk how i feel about the teams that skipped groups not being warmed up and just going straight in. lower bracket gives them chance to get back in it though so all good

I'd much rather prefer two round robin groups of 6 teams each and the top 3 of each group going into 6 team single elimination playoffs. A1, B1 get a bye, A2 play B3, A3 play B2, winners play A1/B1, the winners battle it out in grand finals. The whole tournament can still be wrapped up in 14 days, 10 days for groups (5 game days for each of group A and B, assuming 3 games per day), 1 rest day, and then 3 days for playoffs (#2 vs #3 games, semis, finals). With the added benefit of significantly more action and interregional play, with every team being guaranteed at least 5 games.

This doesn't reward top seeds of competitive regions + it's a single elimination playoff bracket which sucks in Valorant to build epic storylines from.

This current format is the best so far.

They aren't guaranteed to be the 'best' teams tho just because they come from larger regions, specifically Loud/KRU and PRX. Imo, all three of those teams look a lot more beatable than say FNC/OpTic who are already guaranteed to play in the group stage.

Nah, I just put Zeta/DRX specifically cause they're from regions that weren't given a chance to get a free playoff slot. It applies to all teams in groups, but at least teams like say XIA had a chance to play for a playoff slot domestically

The 1st LAN event was also small last year. only 10 teams were there with double elimination, its a far better format than before with 12 teams and now seedings mean something. Probably Masters 2 and champions will be of 16 teams in 4 groups soo chill out. And I get why you are crying about the format after seeing your flair LMAO.
