Because the foundation for the esport was so weak.
It was carried by ridiculous prize pools and easy access to participate.
The game itself did not care to be an esport with the amount of low skill casual orientated items.

imo fortnite has the highest skill ceiling of any game, but it is held back due to all the RNG bullshit the devs add to help cater to noobs so that they have a chance to kill better players. just look at the mechs that they added in season 10, which totally derailed the esport
