How to deal with worry

Hello vlr community I need help.

I'm finishing up my application to uni, and there's this other child my parents have who just got news that his application (to a different school) was rejected. This has sent my family into great turmoil and it puts immense pressure on me.

I am worried that destiny has a similar fate waiting for me.

How do you wise community members deal with such uncertain situations that loom over you like a veil of dread?

and there's this other child my parents have

just say sibling bro 😂

Dude dont worry about it. What the other child did is irrelevant to you. If you are confident in your skills and you think you can make it to the uni, then send the application. And if it gets rejected, its not the end of the world!

The thing is that now they're making me think of ways to help him, and while I am de facto his older brother, we're of the same age and I should not have to think for him.

It's just such an ÆUGH situation especially considering all the essays and assignments piled on my plate. But thanks for the affirmation <3

My honest advice is that you shouldnt really care about your brother for now. It might sound selfish and it is.

Truth is, you have your own problems and your own difficulties. You shouldnt let extra stress flood into you. Focus on your own thing. Do your assignments and send your uni applications. Your old enough brother can take care of himself, and you can stand by him if it gets really bad.

apply to several different colleges and make a convincing effort on the application for the university you are either most looking forward to applying to or the one you are most sure you'll get into

i applied for 5 different colleges in my state and a few other out of state; got into my target pick and a few others without really having many things that set me apart other than good grades and a good application

you'll be fine

The thing is that I only plan to apply to two unis (one is one I want to go to and the other is one that I want go to and is backup/financially better). One's deadline is due by mid Jan and the other one is due Late Nov of next year.

I've struggled to find more than two unis I want to go to, but yeah I guess I'll just keep trying my best. Thank you!

always make sure you have plenty of backups just in case your target picks don't work out

having decent safe picks, like that one public university that everyone you know goes/went to even if isn't exactly one you want to go to, will definitely help with your worry because you know that even in the worst case scenario you'll still get a good college education

but yeah, if you think you have a good application then you'll be alright; don't worry about the results of someone else because you're your own guy and only you know your strengths and weaknesses

best of luck !!

I get it, man. Uni applications are tough. My advice is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. You always want solid backup options but you can't just assume you're gonna get rejected from everything. I promise everything will work out for you if you stay optimistic yet realistic. :)

I'm always here for you, dude. I know you're applying to a Canadian university so we're basically going through the same process right now (more or less... you get the idea)

I just need to finish up answering the questions and then I'll be practically set. Tell me if anything cool happens on your side!

Seeing and comparing yourself to others is a never ending pothole, you have to focus on yourself and your application.

Give it your best, make absolutely sure of that.
I'm hoping you succeed for sure, but make sure you objectively consider the worst case scenario: you don't get in, it's much MUCH better if you know you gave it your all, than compared to thinking you could've done more. Make sure you have a plan C, plan D and plan E (maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point), it's best to have a plan for every outcome.

Another thing, communication is key, talk with your parents (I'm not sure what your relationship with them is like so take this with a grain of salt) make sure they know that you feel pressure, and try to honestly tell them that their reaction is sort of stressing you out

Of course Aayan. I will continue giving it my best, cook up an amazing personal statement, and pray that Canada's holistic uni admissions system lets me in.

My parents have been mostly supportive (my dad really wants me to go to Duke but i don't want to) and my mother has been happy with all my decisions so far. I just don't want to let them down and I will talk to them about it :)
