Are these books overrated?
People tend to put Lotr above anything else and say that because Lotr was first (for them as a child or in terms of being written long time ago) or they're just better and everything else is based on them.
Same with Dune as best scifi ever (for me it's more like sci-fantasy just as star wars).
I also think that some writers from the beginning are too humble towards Tolkien and Herbert saying that they love their books and nothing can compare to 'the masters'.

Did you read anything better than Lotr or Dune books? The book that you would easily put as better maybe becuase you just enjoyed it more or whatever the reason is.
You could also post your 10/10 books if you want. Thanks!

Both are like 4/5, greatness but with flaws that have become more overlooked with time

Forgot to recommend, Ender's Game is close to a 10 for sci-fi, a song of ice and fire for high fantasy

Ender I need to check.
Finished GoT and I understand why Ned is where he is, but too soon man...
Have whole series ready to read though.

Dune is very hard to read. Hubert writes so weirdly.

My fav book is the gambler by fyodor Dostoevsky. I liked a little prince, 100 years of solitude and don Quixote too.

I think russian and spanish literature are some of the best. But idk. I have still a lot to read

Btw go to ted ed's "why you should read" playlist. They talk about the best books and why they're good. Good inspo

I didn't like little prince.
I have seen and read many book recommendation lists. Don't need anything popular.
Hidden 10/10 gems that just worked for random people and why.

Gambler isn't that popular despite being written by dostoevsky.

All the light we cannot see is also not popular and I liked it.

I didn't know it was that popular huh. I loved the way it explained saint malo. I wanna visit one day.

Also look into Isaac Asimov. Mans basically invented sci fi but his books aren't as popular for some reason

Tbh don't think most people call Dune best sci-fi book. It's a seminal example of the genre, but it's widely acknowledged amongst readers that it's not a flawless, amazing, or even easily readable book.

Same thing for Tolkien - dude was born in thr 1800s. While LOTR is extremely well written and birthed much of the modern fantasy genre, I think people are generally aware that it can be hard to get into because of how old the writing is.

Honestly haven't met too many people who call either of these books their favs. I g2g now but ill come back later and drop some recs, this is something I could talk about forever

I've never seen someone say they liked first more than second, I personally found the first one the worst from the 10

Maybe the second book was just too long. The ending should hit me more and I was like 'ok' and nothing else...

The Thin Executioner is a book which I like over Lotr and dune. I don’t particularly think it is better than the two. I still like it more as I read it at a time when I use to pick up random books from library without checking their richness over the internet. Though it does not have much in common with the other two give it a try, you might like it too.

The Hobbit is definitely my favorite fantasy book by far. I haven't read anything that compares to it. I'm unsure I ever will.

The LOTR books are great but there's definitely parts I wasn't as interested in. I think there is definitely some Brandon Sanderson I enjoy as much as, if not more than, LOTR.

I agree 100% that authors are too humble when comparing their work to Tolkien.
