i wanna be truthful and natural but i don't have much experience in some of the questions they ask me. e.g.

what is a time when you have demonstrated good problem solving skills,
tell us about a time when you weighed different options with a time constraint,
tell us about your life outside of work,
tell us about a time where you learnt a new skill.

These questions may look easy to you but my mind just went blank and i didnt prepare properly

i just had my first interview(with basically these questions) and I knew i didn't do as well as i should've. i have another one coming hopefully and im thankful that i had this interview prior so i can really start preparing and focus on my communication(i noticed myself saying um, and filler words alot) . (the reason why i made that leaving post),

most importantly, i want to win against the other candidates ofc.

if you genuinely don't know what to say, ask them for a minute to think instead of just sputtering out some random garbage / filler words
you don't make a fool of yourself + you show that you put thought into your response

does that ever work (taking a minute)? i feel like they would just pick someone else who demonstrated good confidence and interpersonal skills.

It depends on what position they’re looking for.

Sometimes there are trick questions too, and not everyone knows what they want to say/answer instantly either.

Taking time to answer questions does mean you lack in Confidence

yes, it's also just a good habit for communication. everyone is used to instant vapid responses to common interview questions, but if you're able to take your time to digest it then you can come up with something way better

taking your time doesn't mean you're not confident

for my first tech interview i took like 30 seconds to think, then referenced a question they asked earlier in my answer and it was pretty obvious they were surprised i brought it back around

practice practice practice! also, there are websites that have entire lists of commonly-asked interview questions based on profession. as long as you have SOMETHING to work with for those common questions you should be more than fine.

also, even if they ask a question you may not have expected, you can redirect the conversation to something you are familiar with. this is a little trick i use pretty often and it usually works!

seconding practice, i would recommend coming up with a few stories that answer common questions. e.g. for the "good problem solving skills" question, you could share a story about a project at school or an old job, explaining what you did and what the outcome was. i have found that if i have maybe five (rough number) of those stories prepared, i'm able to reuse them for different questions, since a lot of interview questions overlap/are getting at a similar idea

the problem is trying to having the same sort of nervousness while practicing so that you get used to it😅, thanks for the tips tho especially the last one
