Gender identity is the personal sense of one's own gender.[1] Gender identity can correlate with a person's assigned sex or can differ from it.
in some American states, you can check off your gender identity as either male, female or neuter, with neuter basically meaning non-binary or some 3rd gender you identify as, but gender identity is a really slippery slope because it can vary so widely.
