That's very funny. In Greek Jogadoros is a gambler. But you can also call him a "player" (implying he "plays" games of chance ie gambling games). And it derived as actual player in Portuguese I guess.

It is because gambler can also mean "jogador" in brazilian portuguese just like you guys, but for gambler we often use "apostador" (punter) to differentiate both words
