Cancel culture has become popular again. Cancel culture is when someone does something you don't like or don't agree with, you try to cancel them or severely impact their career/reputation. The r word can be offensive to certain people which is understandable. However, people need to understand, that up to the past ten years, people could use the word with their friends and not be scrutinized for it. Only in the past ten years have people really started defining it as a slur. And as you said different countries/cultures have different definitions of the word. Its considered a slur in some countries, and like you said, can be used synonymously with stupid/idiot in other countries. In reality America has become sooooooo soft in the past ten years and were only getting softer.

I don’t expect people here to understand because the average age of this site is like 16. But lemme explain why people don’t like the word retard, it’s not that dumb of a reason.

Imagine being born with a disability that has fucked you your entire life. You have no control over it, literally came with birth and was something you just have to deal with. Now people are using a word that describes you and something that you can’t change, to mean something degrading.

Even if they’re not trying to attack you personally, it feels like shit that a word tied to your characteristics, that you have no control over, is also a word to imply someone is stupid as fuck

I don’t really care about canceling anyone on twitter or whatever but try to be a bit more open minded

(My younger sibling has a disability and I don’t really give a shit what people say, but I know how she reacts to the word retard and honestly it just makes me cringe now)

thank you for saying this, i also have a sibling with a disability and people that aren't exposed to it just don't understand. it is very different than saying stupid, idiot, etc. Retarded began as a medical term. For example, people were diagnosed with mental retardation which is not controllable and now it is used as an insult. They can't chose that.

You guys in the comments are choosing to be stupid idiots by not educating yourself.

I don't think it's a big deal that Kydae laughed, it just made me a bit uncomfortable and the discussion on removing certain words from our vocabulary is important.
