can someone explain to me whats goin on over there? the whole bharat thing
vipermommydomme [#2]Not Indian here, but as far as I know, Bharat is the ancient name for India. India is a colonizer name assigned to the land by the British. So they are choosing to return to the ancient name over the colonizer name.
you summarized it pretty right
Darkobas01 [#10]Bharat was basically the old name, and is still in use in few local languages. It is yet to be made official tho.
It is official bro lol. It’s written in the fucking Constitution that India is Bharat lol. They just wanna change name of everything instead of actually doing something for the country.

I mean you can use it interchangeably but they plan to pass a bill for the change of name afaik.

opposition and people overreaction for no reason
hungeryman [#11]Our politicians are illiterates. Even in the Indian constitution it’s written that India and Bharat are same countries and you can use both. It’s just that you call India Bharat in Hindi. But they wanna name it back to Bharat.
good politician = entertaining speechmaker here

India is not a colonizer name lol. It's just what India was known as to the west. It comes from Greek and Latin. You're giving the English too much credit thinking they could ever come up with a name like India lol.
