CounterStrike majors have been super popular since the early 2000s (WorldCyberGames, ESWC, etc). The popularity between the two is not even close, you can verify by asking people that don't actually follow gaming, which game they have heard of.

I asked a few people, most of them vaguely knew league of legends, about half of them vaguely knew counter strike

None of them really knew about esports, but a few had heard of worlds (and knew a song or two)
