i guess he can direct players in set pieces like when they have a corner or a free kick
In theory he's the only one that can speak to the ref
It's all just for show but it does hold some value, he's supposed to be the leader in the team
He is the symbolic leader of a side. Occasionally, if the game gets a bit chippy, the ref pulls the captains aside and gives them an overall warning about how the rest of the game will go but it's mainly symbolic.
He does the coin flip to see who gets the ball and not much more, directing the team is more of a personality thing not like an actual role
