as you said orgo, physchem, inorgo are toughie classes for sure, which is why it's not worth doing chem if you're not going to actually make use of those classes via a pre-med track

idk i was only national honors; personally id just say dont neglect the labs, those are tough

yeah agreed a mix of good ECs, good grades (APs included), and good awards in the end would certainly nullify a not amazing SAT score and make shooting for the top schools still possible

but who knows tbh im just yappin maybe he went to chemoly camp and he's getting into MIT easily anyway; ive just been assuming that everything else is just OK since he only mentioned his SAT

its anecdotal, but all of my fellow chem majors at my college dreamed of MIT as well and didn't get in; imo the consideration MIT is the most academically demanding for applicants of all schools, you can't get into it through "passion"

if you can really write one hell of an essay and show a lot of interest in spite of mid academics, i'd say Stanford would be a better option

1500 is certainly not competitive or "strong" for MIT, but you should still apply if you love it a lot

in essence just dont major in just “chemistry” unless you’re going into med imo (it generally aligns with a lot of pre-med so yuh)

tippity-top chemistry programs tend to just align with the tippity-schools (HYP, caltech, MIT, etc.) which really take a lot--unfortunately there's not much left to do at this point if you've finished your junior year other than push that SAT to 1550+

but if you have a good number of 5s, a couple big awards, and some ECs yielding results though then you've got a good shot!
