Can a Japanese speaker understand a Korean speaker? I know it's different, but the sound of the language seems to be similar

I asked why just as we have similarities with Spanish, I thought they might have too.
Japanese and Korean are far different than something like Portugese and Spanish
But Portuguese and Spanish were the same language in the past, I speak Spanish, because it is similar I learned the language in 6 months.

thats my point, japanese and korean werent the same language so obviously a person that speaks japanese wouldnt be able to understand korean

No. They probably only sound similar because you don't know either of them. If you learn one of them, you'll be able to tell what language they're speaking. There are similarities in the written form, for example, Chinese characters are present in kanji and hanja, but the pronunciations are very different, in my understanding.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to judge. For example, Spanish and Portuguese sound very similar to me, but if I learned Spanish, I would probably be able to understand the difference.
