You get stars when you post more... you lose stars when you get lots of downvotes.... upvotes only help in combating downvotes... for example bebop he is one of the most frequent user on this site so he had tons of upvotes.. one day he made a dumb post and was most downvoted post at that time and people started downvoting many other of his post so he had approx 200-300 downvotes in total but there was not a single dent on his stars... since he had already farmed many upvotes.
