I know there are many talented montage makers out there, could you suggest me some editing software which you might be comfortable using.
I'm very interested in learning how to edit montages properly.

If you want to edit montages seriously, I suggest learning premiere pro first. After learning the basics you can then start with after effects. make sure to watch guides on these softwares because they can be confusing when learning on your own.
