How does ranked reset work?

Done some research online and these sources always talk about MMR, but what about your actual rank? The rank placements seem inconsistent so I wonder how wide the rank range is that you can place in, does anyone have any insight?

The highest that anyone can place is ascendant 1, so it skews everyone down by at least one full division.

Let's say I'm D1 previous season and rank reset. What's the lowest possible rank and highest rank I can place?

I don't think anyone can answer for sure but expect g1-p3
