Why do some immortal 3 players will be matched up against ascendant players whilst immortal 2 players will be matched up against radiant?

It's their MMR/their duo's mmr. Basically, if you're good at the video game and are better than your rank, you get to play players at a higher rank than yours based on your performance (they make up for this discrepancy by giving you more rr if you win and lower the amount of rr you lose) and vice versa. If their duo is the bad one, it takes the average of the mmrs which could end up being at a lower level than the player may be (or vice versa).
