this applies to the online world, where anyone can say whatever they want and get away with it. gamers, usually being teenagers, are just irresponsible and say stuff. it is getting slowly better, but it what it is. u cant really stop it

i mean yeah when ur behind a screen people feel empowered to say whatever they want even if its racist, homophobic, etc. Plus everyone I know who identifies as a "gamer" either never goes outside or has pretty poor social skills. People who play games but are normal don't really refer to themselves as gamers bc in real life people who don't play games associate it with weird, toxic behavior like the article described.

There is a difference between causality and correlation and these outlets will probably never understand this.
