What I always wondered about them was how they deal with their „holy river Ganges“
I know Indian people who use Vlr probably are part of the higher society there, so what’s your opinion on this? Why are you’re people polluting this river so much but keep saying it’s holy and can’t you change this for a better nature?

Largest Democracy with Huge diversity = endless protests for every little progressive step you take also the state in which the river exists is one of the most backwards ones so things will take more time there and trust me people are trying
when it comes to ganges the main issue has been insane illiteracy of the leaders there tho not talking about the current ones but like historically since independence
don't wanna get this thread bombed but Meritocracy>Democracy in cases like these
also Ibis the river has been sacred for prolly like 1000s of years and the pollution came mostly after reckless industrialization fairly recently so regardless of how worse it gets I'm sure you'll still get millions(small subset of Indian demographic) jumping in it for a dip during the kumbh mela
1 River, Ganga serves around 400 million people. Even more people, make visits to the river for religious purposes from India and lastly not to mention that some of the popular tourist spots are also along the river banks.
There is no way you can keep this river clean unless you invest tons of money and resources into keeping it clean.
All the rivers in the world that serve such a huge population are severely polluted Ganga is no exception. Citarum, Jordan, Yellow River, Sarno, Mississippi are all polluted and they don't serve as many people as Ganga does.
What makes it worse is that certain Hindu customs involve the river. Floating candles and other ritual stuff frequently makes way into the river.
All the waste and toxic stuff that industry produces in the most densely populated region of India has to go there.
Also I believe you are in a causation-correlation problem here. Indians (more specifically Hindus) consider the River to be holy because it serves so many people rather than "The river is holy that is why we will use it".
sure 400 Million people depend on it but no fucking way more people visit the river on the regular even Kumbh mela at its peak has 200Million people visiting at max

Untreated sewage (not untreated industrial disposal) that is the biggest source of pollution.
Industrial waste is the second biggest cause of pollution.
Organic waste from other sources contributes the 3rd largest which includes religious waste, domestic use chemicals like Shampoos and cleaners or pesticide/fertilizer runoff from farmlands.

Yes, my man just casually scoffing at 200 million people coming to bathe in a river/throw stuff into it. 200 million people is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge number my friend. That's around the population of Indonesia that has the one of the worst polluted rivers in the world.
A discharge of 40K m3/s is impressive but you severely underestimate the effects of a huge population. Only 8 billion tiny humans are sufficient to change the climate of an entire planet.
How about you talk to some stats
and then shares a 206 page pdf and then proceeds to say the same thing I said earlier ie Untreated sewage and Industrial waste
cite some stats where a subset(religious waste) of 3rd largest source/contributors contributes a significant amount in the water pollution
I say its negligible compared to the first two
so start sharing numbers and stats and not 200 page documents
Ganga has it's patches of pollution mostly where people go to bathe in it and also it's a dumping ground for ashes....I have literally seen Ganga river in 4 different places and it seem polluted only once. Yes the pollution in Ganga at places is high but still not the whole river....I have spent some of the most peaceful time of my life sitting beside the flowing Ganga river talking with my brothers and sisters and it was a really pleasant experience
