YO ik this isnt pro play related,

but for new act - is it like previous rank resets where ppl immortal + atuomatically get placed ascendant or do we have to play out our games?

Just like every other episode reset. 5 placements for everyone in Act 1, With Ascendant added anyone under immortal might see potentially one rank shift up either immediately or fairly quickly due to more accurate placements. Whereas anyone in low immo or high diamond might be in the new ascendant rank.

From Riot's EvrMoar, Senior Competitive Designer:

• Every episode the highest you can place is Diamond 1, and we will squish all ranks downward. You can expect to drop(usually) 1-4 ranks from where you were last episode. Higher ranks get dropped harder due to leaderboard ranking, boosting concerns, skill atrophy, etc.
• Every Act we only reset the leaderboard, dropping all players to 10% of their current RR(if on leaderboard). Everyone else is only required to play 1 placement and will earn their previous rank back from the prior Act.

Replace "Diamond 1" with "Ascendant 1" and that should answer your question. Also, you have to play five games.
