So i just came across the whole SEA thing.
Why would you combine the big ass region into 1 challengers league and allow SOOP international to be the ONLY platform to be able to broadcast? Surely this was NOT the best way for tier 2?
So we can assume that Sea tier 2 is dying even without soop deal.
2 possibilities for why they merged:
Under soop deal they had to merge, this seems unlikely , soop is small while riot is big, soop has little bargaining power even if afreeca is behind soop.
They are merging even without soop deal, if anything Soop deal actually helped them more. Number 2 is more likely.
SEA got combined to increase the level of competition in the SEA region, Regions like vietnam and philipines in their T2, do not hold a good number of really good teams and large number of highly talented players as of what I saw from ascension and watching few of their t2 matches ,these regions will easily get a boost by increasing the overall level of competition, SEA includes indonesia, Singapore , malaysia and thailand , these regions are pretty good in their own but grouping them together makes it a really good competition level plus it helps to reduce their production cost as instead of 4-6 different VCL , they do a singular one and it also pools in the viewership to get better numbers and thus make that part of t2 not only long term sustainable for riot but also makes it a good enough region to produce even higher than now talent players and as for SOOP thing, they just threw out enough money at riot to buy it, they want to make their platform known and have viewership there, it definitely sucks but what can we do.
TLDR: REDUCES COST FOR RIOT AND BETTER COMPETITION LEVEL AND POOLS VIEWERSHIP, SOOP BOUGHT RIOTS AND WE CANT DO ANYTHING
