In nature, there are 2 genders - male and female. If a "human being" feels like he is neither of these two, then he/she calls himself/herself "non-binary".

After reading about it for quite a while and seeing other people post about it, my best understanding is that it's like a girlie boy or boyish girl type of thing, a mix of both genders

"Non-binary[a] and genderqueer are umbrella terms for gender identities that are outside the male/female gender binary.[2][3] Non-binary identities often fall under the transgender umbrella since non-binary people typically identify with a gender that is different from the sex assigned to them at birth,[3] although some non-binary people do not consider themselves transgender.[4][5]"

Binary is a system (sometimes of two). Non being binary is not being part of female or male gender and maybe others too

It's like having balls or not having balls depending upon your mood for that day.
