Why is stoppage time a thing?

Why don't they stop the clock when the ball isn't in play?

It’s so the game will be over faster. Cause who wants to actually watch that snooze fest

keeps the game more fluid.
besides they have added time to make up for lost time

yeah but the added time isn't accurate

there's no point in having a clock if the game isn't even being timed correctly

stopping the timer every 2 minutes is confusing and annoying

if the game was being stopped every few minutes bc some random mf went neymar then the game just stops being good. Besides the stoppage time adds some spice to the game. It doesn't have to be accurate, but most of the time its just an apporximation of the time lost.

that's fair

in sports like basketball and football where time is one of the most important aspects of the game, i feel like having the time in soccer being more strict could lead to more tense endings. it's also one of the only gripes i have with soccer

time is also a tactically element (albeit a bit dirty)

time wasting can be useful in delaying play and to try and stop the oppositions tempo.
time wasting does sometimes get punished with cards (yellow cards mainly).
the world cup did try to combat time wasting with way more added time. There were alot of games with more than 10 minutes of added time.

I can understand where you are coming from. Plays like a buzzer beater are really hype
