Story wise it’s not as well written, but DAMN if it isn’t some of the best action in modern media with a fantastic art style to compliment it
Manga will always be better than anime IMO so I can’t comment super well on the anime but for sure the manga is goated

Those scenes are directed/portrayed to make you uncomfortable, it's not fan service. Outside of that stuff the character writing and world building is S tier.
