That sounds like something that could happen but in my experience it's pretty rare for people to not take the AP exam seriously, as it is 100 dollars cheaper to just not take the AP test

the amount of students not trying is not high enough to cause a 20-40% difference in graduation percentage

also a full fleshed curriculum is going to be more forgiving than a single course/exam, as there is significantly more time/material to make up for mistakes

pass rate for IB is 88.9% according to my google search

AP pass rate tends to hover between 50-75% depending on the course

AP classes are pretty similar

In my high school anyone could choose to take whatever class they wanted (honors, standard, or AP) given that they had taken all nevessary prerequisite classes, but basically the same people that took one AP class took the rest in the same category

So all of the advanced math and science kids basically had classes together all throughout high school so it was pretty tight knit as well
