I set up an ethernet cable and for some reason it’s not working. it says unidentified network and never connects properly. it also says “cannot reach the DHCP server”. i’ve tried YT tutorials but it just doesn’t work. wondering if anyone knew what could be the issue

How is your network set up? (e.g. xfinity coaxial cable -> modem -> router -(ethernet)-> computer)
Maybe your router doesn't have DHCP enabled?

I just used an ethernet cord from like walmart are something, connected it to my computer then my router. it’s xstream internet if that helps any

Connect to your router, it should say the ip address to put into your browser (e.g. 192.168.0.1) on the body of the router or the manual or something. You can do it on your computer as this doesn't need internet access.
I don't know what router you're using, but there should be an option for DHCP somewhere; check and make sure DHCP is on for ethernet connections. Otherwise you can try to manually assign an IP address to your computer.

What is the ethernet connected to?

Your computer isn't getting an IP address via DHCP. Either you're not able to reach your router (I assume you have a router from your ISP that hands out DHCP by default), or your network is using static IPs (I doubt this)

we got 3 different things when the internet guy came. maybe im just not plugged into the correct thing? i’ll check on it

Probably a modem, a router, and maybe an access point? idk, you usually only need the first 2.

The modem should have a coax/fiber hookup depending on the service, then connect to the router. The router should have a "WAN" port that the modem connects to, and 1-4 "LAN" ports where you plug your devices in. You want to be in one of those LAN ports
