not american but it's hard to remember your specific age but it's easy to remember when you did x or the event that happens at around the same time you did x
American here, when we mention say “when I was a Senior”, or “when I was in Junior year of high school”, it’s because people really don’t mind telling how old they are. Also, most people can be younger than a normal Senior high school student (17-18 y/o) since they can skip semesters/school years, so telling their age will make it different compare to their school year
To be honest it’s because i remember events from what grade in school i was in, not what age i was
If i think about freshman year I remember everything about freshman year, but if you ask me what I did when I was 13 I’d have to figure out what grade I was in at that time
