Same watched the entire thing and i think its overrated as hell. Its ur typical shounen with nothing remarkable to offer.
I would argue it actually subverts shonen tropes, it doesn't rely on flashbacks to explain characters. All of the characterization you get happens in real time. I would say the nen system is remarkable in itself, but using this kind of terminology to describe storytelling can make anything sound bad. Does anything "remarkable" happen in Breaking Bad? Not necessarily, still an amazing work of fiction. I would also go as far as to say HxH has the best villains in shonen, rather than the common take over the world type villains, HxH has villains like Hisoka, Pariston, and tseriaddnich who are essentially sociopaths. They operate out of sheer pleasure or self-fulfillment rather than any typical shonen villain motives. Don't even get me started on the amazing character development of Meruem, or the interesting dynamics between the phantom troupe, who are all unique and bring their own ideals and philosophy when handling situations. Shonen villain groups rarely have inner conflict, there's alot of realism in it. If it was a typical shonen, the main 4 protagonists would prob be together throughout the main series, but they separate because they all have their own goals and motives. Also HxH has the most diversity in terms of tone, it's not pure chaos throughout the whole series like Death note or AOT. I disagree with calling things overrated simply because you don't like it, I thought Your Lie in April was the worst shit I've ever seen in my life but there's obviously a reason why so many people like it, it's just not for me.
