Every country in Europe has a language barrier with the neighbors, go from Austria to Italy and try speaking German to Italians, will they understand you? Na brain.
Most of Europe(not counting the UK ofc) speaks terrible English on average, exceptions are mainly Germanic countries, especially the Netherlands or Scandinavian states. English is not the lingua franca in Europe as much as it is in North America, come to France and test it yourself, come to Spain or Italy, and I'm not even going to mention countries in Eastern Europe like Poland or Romania or Lithuania.
