He is trying to set himself up for failure. He's been doing decent, no need to go back to that looser mindset. There's nothing wrong with an initiator top fragging and doing well, obviously that was not good enough for a team to win.
But don't deflect and set yourself up this way so that when you play like shit people don't come at you and say 'you didn't do your job'. At this stage of the game everyone has to do both, be a good team player and get your frags as well. You can't be insta crouch spraying and whiffing every kill and expect to win as well.
