EMEA aka the region with most success until that point missed their 2 best teams (Fnatic were better than G2 before lower-final). It was also really optimal meta for both FPX and Fnatic, G2 didn't even have proper Jett player. Even Liquid the 4th seed EMEA made it to playoffs and finished same as The Guard.

Masters 1 was pretty much just OpTic vs LOUD vs DRX vs TheGuard vs G2 from which TheGuard and G2 were expected to choke and underperform. FPX won Masters 2 and Masters 1 meta was arguably even stronger for them. FPX's and Fnatic's map pools were shit in Champs because of Pearl.
